Matarow got his start in rock drumming by listening to New Wave, Punk, Rock and Heavy Metal genres as a teenager. He was also greatly influenced by Japanese rock bands such as Y.M.O, Loudness and The Willard, the latter which he actually eventually joined. His musical style was also impacted by foreign heavy metal and new wave bands such as the Sex Pistols, The Damned, Ozzy Osbourne, Iron Maiden, The Pop Group and Ultravox.
His respect for Stewart Copeland (The Police), Neal Peart (Rush) and Rat Scabies (The Damned) led him to try to emulate their solid beat technique and this in turn drew him to AHEAD Drumsticks.
